Landscapes (2020- )

Paintings

McLean combines spontaneous, unpredictable processes- including pouring liquid paint and physically tilting the canvas- with more controlled, traditional techniques using brushes and tools. Often working simultaneously in oil, acrylic, and spray paint, his layered approach reflects the instability and vulnerability inherent in his subject matter.                        Drawing on found online imagery of locations directly affected by climate change, the works invite reflection on humanity’s position within the natural world and the consequences of environmental manipulation and intervention. Through both process and theme, the paintings examine the delicate balance between human agency and natural forces, underscoring the fragility of planetary and human survival.
